Topic: TSD Rally Video?

Would anyone here be interested in a short video that would follow along on an actual rally? I have some friends that do quite a bit of amateur film production (film festivals and contest type stuff), I bet I could get them to tag along for one of the local Friday nighters with some filming equipment.

This question is directly mainly to Music, since you're asking so many questions. I really believe you would learn so much more actually running an event, which you can't since there are no local rallies. My goal for a video would be to show people how little you really need to compete, and more importantly, have fun.

Maybe those that are interested could chime in with what they would like to see, and what kind of information they would like to get out of it. I'll talk with my friends to see if they're up for it, and with the local rally group to make sure it would be OK to film.

Re: TSD Rally Video?

While I have run rallys before, I would like a video to 1. - Teach me something I missed (I am sure I did) and 2. - to show to folks to give them an idea of what we do on one Saturday a month driving around the countryside.

Re: TSD Rally Video?

I think it's a great idea!  People need to see  how (easy) it is to rally, and how enjoyable it is.

I'd put it on my website, YouTube, an other places to get the sport more attention.  It's a LOT better than the porno (TV) people are wasting time with lately.

Like Clint said, you might just catch something that we haven't seen so we'll all get a lesson from it  (on what to do or what NOT to do  big_smile   )

As for myself, I'd say you don't  have to get the whole thing, but probably edit what you do get to show all the different things involved in your typical rally.

Make sure you get shots of people smiling and laughing all the time they are doing things.

Re: TSD Rally Video?

Are you interested in any particular part of the rally, for him to concentrate some effort on,  Clint?

I'd like to show it to my car club, to show them what  rally is (not high-speed cruising.)

Re: TSD Rally Video?

Thanks for the input guys, you seem to be wanting what I was planning to put into it.

Right now it looks like it would work best to start with two videos; one that goes over all the how to (registration, setting to rally time, what to do at checkpoints, basic main road following, etc.) and another that would follow a team during a rally. At first I was going to try to combine the two, but talking with my friend with more experience in filming has me leaning more toward seperating them up.

One of my goals is to get them posted to youtube, promoting both Road Rallying in general and our local club events. If they prove popular, I even have some other topics that could be covered in more shows. Some of them include differences between classes, other style of events like touring rallies and brisk-gravel style. These would be either how-to style or narrative style, depending on the topic.

I'll try to keep you guys in the loop about the project. Right now the hardest part looks to be getting enough equipment to film everything and getting enough light to film in the car at night.

Re: TSD Rally Video?

When we have family things like Chistmas or birthdays, I get out my digital voice recorder and let it run in my shirt pocket.  You can do the same for meetings, classroom lectures, etc.   I can get 40 hours of audio on it. You might try that;  recording a LOT of raw audio, then grab bits for the video.    That way you can create a narrative while things are happening realtime, and you won't have to remember what was happening in the video/film because you've got the narrative on the recorder.  Except the parts when you go to the restroom.

It might even be useful to us here or other interested people who don't rally to be able to read a transcript of the video, including the conversations, in-car talk, etc., if you are able to do that after you are finished editing.

That's what I would do if I were doing this project myself.   I think I will take my voice recorder at the least, because I'm going to be working a CP at a rally on the 6th.

If you would like some things to look at in the meantime, the ITN  group has a lengthy video on what they do.    http://carzero.freeservers.com/video.htm

Re: TSD Rally Video?

Good idea about the digital voice recorder, I had the same idea. I have a recorder that I keep in my car for recording interesting looking roads and landmarks that I can go back and look at on a map. My only concern is that the audio quality may be a little rough for a video, but that may be fixable with a good mic.

I help out on a stage rally car that uses the same idea to record the in-car audio on stage. The driver combines the audio from the recorder with the video footage so you can hear road/engine noises and the stage notes together. Camera is a Hero Go-Pro camera mounted to the roof of the car. I may try to borrow this camera for the videos, but need to talk to the owner first. Just to warn you, there is a naughty word near the end of the video, so you may not want any kids around the first time you watch it.

What rally are you going to?

Re: TSD Rally Video?

If the in-car audio is not to your liking, You could just transcribe the raw audio from your drive, and then overdub new speech into the final video, like a narrative.

Re: TSD Rally Video?

Per a discussion about this on another place,  the idea came up to script what happens in the video;  exactly what should happen, just like they do in the movie business.

Video from a real rally may not necessarily be the best thing, but could add some realism in certain situations.  Instead create the script, and go out on the road, per se, with another to simulate a rally team and record whatever video and audio things are needed.   You will get exactly what you need exactly when you want it to happen. You could record the spoken parts in a studio or room (like at home) but it might sound a little too quiet, not like real in-car audio.  Maybe sit in a parking lot in the car to get the spoken parts?

I'll script one myself for fun and give it a shot myself.  Polishing engine parts to a mirror gets boring and I need a break.

Re: TSD Rally Video?

Zack,

I took my digital recorder to the rally last weekend (Ohio Winter Rally) and I recorded the  mini "rally school." There were about 4 in the group, and we were in the same room as all the other rallyists who were marking up the RIs and discussing whatever, so there was a lot of background noise, and I was not able to make out the voice of the 'instructor' in the recording, or my own voice for that matter.  I was going to take a digital video recorder, but decided to travel light instead.

If you do record a group at a rally, try to get one isolated in a quiet room.  Otherwise, the idea of scripting all the conversation, as well as the video, is the best idea.

God luck with your project.
