There really IS  something good for road rally for your smartphone, or in my case  an Android tablet:

It's called Richta Rally calculator.

You might say it  does for you what you can do with a programmable calculator, but it goes a little further.  It also allows you to pre-enter all your CASTs for a leg, then when you are driving, you just  advance to the next CAST, and tap the Big "+" button when you travel 0.1 mile (or 1.0  mile,or .05 mile, etc.)

So far, I've tried it on the Ohio Winter Rally, and it worked fine after I got used to it (always learn new stuff before you compete!)and I thought I'd let you all know too.

It seems to work really well on my 7-inch Android tablet, because  otherwise it's kinda crowded with all the buttons, but I suppose you could use it with an Android "smartphone."  I think there is one with GPS capability too (probably the newest version) so it will track the distance like a Halda unit.

The developer also has a rally checkpoint clock that I've used while manning a checkpoint.  You tap the Split button and it records  the time a car reaches the checkpoint sign.

Is that what you might or should expect at most casual rallies?  I read a lot about how people can get zeros on every leg, and that would certainly be intimidating for any beginner or novice.

Is that correct?  I suppose using a set of relays and a switch or two, that you could set up things to work off the car's light dimmer.

Do you need to get an SCCA license to join the fun?  What kind of license should you get? Is the membership fee mentioned on the registration form good for only that one event or for, say, other events by the same club?

sec per 1/10 mile = 360/ CAS

2.  Slow down and read the signs.  You should never have to ask "What did that sign say?"

3.  Know the rules, especially the route following priorities.

4.  Communicate with your team mate.  When the navigator says "CAST 40 for point two miles after Smith" and the driver hears "CAST 40 4.2 miles after Smith" you're already in trouble.

Is there any rally-related programming to use with a TI-55 calculator?  I also have a TRS-80 model PC-4 (pocket computer that uses the Basic programming language) that I could write software for, but I'm not really up on the calculator stuff enough to translate.
